The Children's Safety Network hosted a series of webinars on the issue of bullying awareness, response, and prevention based on the "Building Capacity to Reduce Bullying and Its Impact on Youth across the Lifecourse" workshop convened by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and National Research Council (NRC) in April 2014. The fourth and final webinar in the series focused on the role pediatricians can play in screening for, preventing, and reducing the impact of bullying. Pediatricians and parents alike feel that pediatricians have an important role to play in bullying prevention. Dr. Joseph Wright, Chairman of Pediatrics at the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC, explored that role by reviewing the clinical implications of bullying and clarifying how pediatricians can identify and prevent bullying by educating community members and providing anticipatory guidance to families and youth. Dr. Matthew Masiello, Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Care Coordination for children with complex medical conditions at the Children‘s Institute of Pittsburgh, reviewed the challenges and recommendations facing physicians working with various stakeholders to address health and social issues related to bullying. He also reviewed office and school-based tools that community pediatricians can leverage to support and advise children and families who are exposed to bullying and related health consequences.
